Creating Lines Normal to a Curve

You can create a line normal to ca curve using the Line Normal To Curve command. As a perpendicularity constraint is created, the line remains perpendicular to the curve even when it is moved.

Before you begin:

To perform this task, create a spline.

  1. Click Line Normal To Curve in the Profile toolbar (Line sub-toolbar).

  2. Click a point on the curve.

  3. Click a second point on the curve.

The line is created, as well as a perpendicularity constraint (between the line and the curve).

    Tips:
    • After clicking Line Normal to Curve , you can deselect Select a Curve Before in the Sketch Tools toolbar to first select a point outside the curve.
    • If Select a Curve Before is selected, the creation of the line normal to curve is created symmetrically at the curve when clicking Symmetrical in the Sketch Tools.

A point lying on the curve or outside the curve can be selected in order to specify where the normal line should to go through. A warning message is issued if the selected point is not valid and prompts you to select a new point or curve.

Tip: Lines normal to a curve are created as close as possible to where you clicked on the curve. You will get better results if, before clicking the curve, you try to position the line as perpendicular to the curve as possible.
