Using Paste Special in Folders

Creating a hierarchical structure of folders allows you to organize your reference and representation objects in a logical way. You can develop your folder hierarchy by creating new folders, creating new folders based on existing ones, or by using Copy, Cut and Paste commands. This task shows you how to perform a paste special command.

This task shows you how to:

Before you begin: To use the Paste Special command you must have at least one folder copied or cut in the Clipboard. The Paste Special command will be unavailable if no data exists in the Clipboard.

Note: In the Folder Editor window, you can use the Paste Special command in the 3D representation of the folder structure, or in the folder structure tree. In this example the folder structure tree is used. Three options are available when you are using Paste Special in Folders into a folder structure:

  • If any reference or representation is modified in the VPM Editor session then Paste Special will result in an error message. You will have to save the modification made to reference and representation prior to paste special.

  • Paste Special commands can only be used on a single folder.

  4. The pasted folder, its sub-folders and the attached references and representations are duplicated and inserted into the folder structure. The references and representations are not shared between the source folder and a target folder because an actual copy of the objects were placed into the selected folder structure.

Important: The naming of the folder or duplicated item depends on the convention established during setup and can be changed by the Administrator. In particular the user may have the possibility to enter an identification string. This string will only be used for the naming of the duplicated objects which were attached to folders. It will not be taken into consideration for the naming of the duplicated folders themselves.

The Paste Standard and Paste with whole duplication options enable you to perfom an item paste into the folder.

  • When you paste special an item into the folder, only Paste Standard and Paste with whole duplication options are available.

Note: Refer to the Paste Standard and Paste with whole duplication sections in this document for more information.
