Reshaping Corners

Sometimes, when filleting, you can see that corners resulting from the operation are not satisfactory. This capability lets you quickly reshape these corners.

This task shows you how to:

Before you begin: Open a 3D shape containing an edge fillet or a variable radius fillet that needs to be reshape

Warning: Be careful when selecting the edges as the order of selection affects the final shape of the fillet. This explains why you may sometimes encounter error messages when filleting.

Reshape a Corner

You can reshape the corners by defining setback distance.

Taking a closer look at the corner, you can notice that the edges need to be rounded again:

  1. After launching the Edge Fillet dialog box to edit the fillet, click More>>

    to access additional options.

  2. Click Blend corner(s) to detect the corner to reshape. In our example, only one corner is detected. The application shows it in the 3D area.

Warning: When the application detects several corners, it is not possible to reshape just a few of them: all of them will be edited.

The setback distance field determines for each edge a free area measured from the vertex along the edge. In this area, the system adds material so as to improve the corner shape. The tangent edges are automatically selected if they are in propagation with the selected edges. This allows you to specify the setback distance value exceeding the length of the corresponding concurrent edges.

  3. Enter a value in the Setback distance field. For example, 13.

  4. Click Preview to examine the result:

To edit the distance for the top edge, click 13 and enter 22 as the new value in the Setback distance field.

  5. Repeat the operation for the edge below using the same distance value.

  6. Click OK to confirm the operation. The corner is reshaped.

Edit Blend Corners

You can edit the blend corners using the options available in contextual menu.

When editing an edge fillet containing at least one blend corner, options are available in the Blend corner(s) contextual menu.

  • Select either:
    • Create by edges: selected and propagated edges are taken into account, therefore you do not need to select the concurrent edges of the corners. This option replaces the current Blend Corner(s) command and does not remove the existing blend corners.
    • Create by vertex: It automatically adds the corresponding blend corner with the default setback distance. The concurrent edges of the selected vertex are added to the list of Object(s) to fillet (provided the Minimal or Tangency modes are selected) if these edges are new ones or if they are not part of the propagations. This option is available even if some corners are already defined.
    • Edit: This option displays a list of editable setback values. Note that an error message is displayed if you try to edit multiple blend corners.
    • Remove: This command removes the selected blend corners.

When no corner is already created, only the Create by edges and Create by vertex options are available from the contextual menu.
