Navigating Folders

Folders can be navigated in the Folder Editor tree and in the 3D Navigation. This task shows you how to navigate a folder structure. In the Folder Editor window, you can use these commands in the 3D representation of the folder structure, or in the folder structure tree.

VPM Folders also support Live Preview functionality. You can open and close the Live Preview by pressing the Spacebar. Expand/Collapse

The Expand/Collapse command enables you to expand and close a folder in the folder structure tree.

  1. To Expand a Folder:

    In the 3D representation of the folder structure:


    • double-click on the folder.



      Selecting a folder in the 3D Navigator view highlights the corresponding object in the tree.

    • or in the folder structure tree, double-click the folder name,

    • or in the folder structure tree, click the "+" to the left of the folder.

    The folder is expanded one level.



  2. To Collapse a Folder:

    To collapse a folder, in the folder structure tree, click the - next to the folder to be collapsed. The folder is collapsed.

Tip: Refer to the Folder Editor document for information on how to control whether objects in your folders can be expanded or not.

Expand All

The Expand All command enables you to expand the entire folder structure (or parts of the folder structure) in one action. This command can be selected from the contextual (right-click) menu, the Folder Navigation toolbar or the View menu.

  • To expand all, select a folder in the folder structure tree and right-click Expand All . In this example, select the root node and click Expand All to navigate all skateboard items.

Tip: Refer to the Folder Editor document for information on how to control whether objects in your folders can be expanded or not.

Select Under

The Select Under... command lets you select all children under the selected folder in the folder structure. This command can be selected from the contextual (right-click) menu or the View menu.

  1. Right-click the selected folder, or a reference in the expanded folder structure and click Select Under... to select all children fitting a specific criteria in the structure of the selected folder, or reference. The Select Under ... dialog box appears.



  2. Define the criteria (if any) to be used for the selection using the Simple or Advanced tabs. (The Volume tab for Select Under is not available in Folder Editor).

    To select objects by type

    • Click on the Simple tab (if not already clicked) in the Select Under ... dialog box and select an object type from the Object type list.



    To select based on type and attribute information
    • Click on the Advanced tab (if not already clicked) in the Select Under ... dialog box and:


      • select an object from the Object type list,

      • select an attribute from the Attribute type list,

      • type the value of an attribute in the Attribute Value box.



    Select the Keep current selection check box to keep these settings next time you use the Select Under... command.

  3. Click OK.

Refresh and Collapse

The Refresh and Collapse... command enables you to collapse the folder structure to a selected level to refresh the structure content. This command can be selected from the contextual (right-click) menu or the View menu and can be used on multiple folders in the folder structure.

  • In the folder structure tree or in the 3D folder structure representation,


    • right-click an object and select Refresh and Collapse

    • or, select an object and then, in the menu bar, select View > Refresh and Collapse

    The selected level is collapsed and its structure content is refreshed.

Vertical Split

The Splitter vertically divides the Navigation window into two sections. You can adjust the Splitter position in order to modify the partition, which enables you to disengage space on the right-hand side. You can use this when you have large structure trees with long folders, references or representations names.

  • To adjust the Splitter, drag it right or left.

    The vertical split of the Navigation window is adjusted accordingly.
