Inserting a New Folder

Creating a hierarchical structure of folders allows you to organize your reference and representation objects in a logical way. You can develop your folder hierarchy by creating new folders, creating new folders based on existing ones, or by using Copy, Cut, Paste commands. This task shows you how to insert a new folder into an existing folder structure. In the Folder Editor window, you can insert a new folder using the 3D representation of the folder structure or in the folder structure tree. In this example the folder structure tree is used.

  1. In the Folder Editor window select a folder (root or child) under which you want to insert a new folder.

  2. Right-click and select Insert > Insert New Folder from the contextual menu. The Folder dialog box appears.

The name field is auto-populated based on how the folder was created:

If the folder is not created from a clone command, the default name is displayed as "Folder"n, where n represents the integer for which there is no conflict with the names of a sibling folder.

Important: The first default folder name under a parent will be Folder. The second default folder name will be Folder2. All subsequent default names will follow the formula described above.

If the folder is created from a clone command:

    • Reuse the name of the cloned folder if no sibling exists with that name.

    • Prepend "Copy of" to the name of the cloned folder if a sibling folder is using that name.

    • Append n to the name of the cloned folder where n is the lowest integer greater than 1 for which there will be no conflict with names of sibling folders.

  3. Despite being auto-populated, the Name field is editable. Type the name of the new folder in the Name box and click Finish.

Important: When inserting a new folder the name must be unique among folders with the same parent. An error message will appear if a folder with the same name already exists in the same parent folder.

The newly created folder appears in the folder structure and is saved to the database.
