Creating Proximity Groups

You can create proximity groups that allow you to group elements (points, lines, surfaces) based on a selection of geometries and a specified tolerance. You can create groups in a dedicated set or create group under an existing mesh.

Before you begin: A mesh must exist for groups under a mesh.

  1. To create a group in the Groups set, click Proximity Group in the Groups toolbar. To create a group under an existing mesh, right-click the mesh in the specification tree and select Create Group > Proximity Group.

The Proximity Group dialog box appears.

  2. Optional: In the Name box, modify the name of the group.

  3. Select the geometries (points, lines or faces) to create the group.

You can select geometries in sequence, and your first selection conditions the type of group you create.

Important: The geometries you select in sequence must belong to the same 3D shape.

    • To create a proximity group of nodes, select geometric points.
    • To create a proximity group of element edges, select geometric lines.
    • To create a proximity group of element faces, select geometric faces.

  4. In the Tolerance box, enter a value of tolerance.

  5. Click Apply to create and update the group.

  6. Click OK.

The group is created and appears in the specification tree under the Groups set. If you created a group directly under an existing mesh, the group is stored under the mesh in the Nodes and Elements set.
