About Electrical Devices

Electrical devices are standard 3D shape or 3D Part to which electrical behavior has been added. This page provides information that will help you understand and create harness components.

About Device Creation

Since a certain number of properties are assigned at product level, you must create a product or 3D Part for each electrical device you want to create.

The 3D shape representation contains the geometry. You can either:

  • Create the geometry from scratch.
  • Insert the geometry into the product from the database.

You can also open a product with both a 3D shape representation and geometry directly from the database.

Once defined, electrical devices can be stored dedicated catalogs or directly in the database.

About 3D Part

A 3D Part is automatically created when clicking on Electrical Branch Geometry icon.

You can also create a 3D Part in order to define it as a device (Connector, etc.) by selecting PLM Access > 3D Part. For more information, please refer to Creating a New 3D Part in the VPM Physical Editor User Guide.

A 3D Part is an object composed of a product with a 3D Representation. You can check this status in the Properties contextual menu > Usage: 3D Part.

Note: If you are a DS Passport customer, you can read the

Its main characteristic is to have a "Terminal node" behavior and the impossibility to delete the link between the Product and the Representation; the 3D Shape is a mandatory representation.

The Electrical Branch Geometry or device will then inherit the 3D Part's properties such as deleting, duplicating, versioning, changing maturity.

A 3D Part is also seen as one object in the Propagation and Search in Database dialog boxes.

To find electrical devices, you can use the Insert Existing... command. For more information about Insert Existing Products or 3D parts, please refer to the VPM Physical Editor User's Guide: Inserting PLM Objects in an Existing Assembly.
