Administering the Workbench List

As an administrator, you can manage the list of workbenches displayed in the Start menu. The aim is to give end users a restricted access to these workbenches by making some them unavailable.

When a workbench is locked, it is no longer listed in the Start menu and end users cannot set it as a favorite workbench.

  1. Start a session in administration mode.

For full details, see Infrastructure Installation Guide: Common Installation and Administration Tools: Managing Settings: Locking Settings.

  2. Select Tools > Customize... or right-click any icon in any toolbar then select Customize....

  3. In the Customize dialog box, access the Start Menu tab.

  4. Right-click the workbench to be locked then select Lock/Unlock.

A pop-up message is displayed to inform you that you need to restart your session to take your modifications into account and the symbol is displayed next to the locked workbench:

  5. Repeat the previous step as many times as necessary.

Important: To lock a workbench that is already listed in the Favorites list, first remove the workbench from the list before locking it. Otherwise, an error message is displayed.

  6. Optional: To unlock a workbench, right-click it then select Lock/Unlock.

  7. Click the lock symbol right under the Start Menu tab.

The lock symbol now looks like this: .

The list of locked workbenches is stored in a settings file named FrameConfig.CATSettings referenced by the CATReferenceSettingPath environment variable.

  8. Click Close then exit the session.

Warning: If the administrator did not lock the Start Menu tab as explained in step 5, the end user will be able to lock or unlock workbenches and therefore, he will also be able to transfer them to the Favorites list.

  9. Start a session as an end user and, using the same environment, select Tools > Customize....

The lock symbol now looks like this to indicate that you cannot make changes to this tab:

If the end user tries to transfer a locked workbench to the Favorites list, an error message is displayed. However, he can still select authorized workbenches as favorites.

  10. Display the Start menu.

The locked workbenches are no longer listed.

Important: When a workbench is locked by the administrator, the end user cannot access it, even though he acquires the corresponding license afterwards.
