Drafting File-based Design Import

File-based Design Import enables to import V4 and V5 files and their related documents, into the V6 database. This document provides information on how CATDrawing's links are migrated in this release.

Also refer to the File-based Design Import User's Guide, it provides global and useful information about the V5/V6 migration process.

FBDI process

The FBDI process is successful when the CATDrawing:


  • has links to accessible documents only
  • has links to a non-accessible document but has been isolated (using the Always activated or User choice option via Tools > Options > FBDI tab, Link Isolation section).
    Important: A CATDrawing isolated from 3D has specific behaviors:
    • Inserted objects (OLE) created with link are deleted.
    • Generative views still contain generated geometry, but links are removed (the broken links icon is displayed in the specification tree).

    • If its 2D component reference is not accessible, a 2D component is imported but isolated.

Resulting drawing representation

When the FBDI process is successful, a few links/items are partially imported. This table indicates the modified items and their import status.

Roughness symbol Imported. The roughness symbol is standard compliant in CATIA V6.
Extension line Imported. In a CATIA V5 session, an associated roughness has no extension. After migration, a roughness has an extension line if needed.

With link Imported but isolated (if the document is accessible).

Note that as the object is embedded, it can be edited.
Balloons  
Associative balloons Imported but isolated.
Bill of Material Generated report
